Hajduk Veljko Petrovic (1780–1813), Duke of Krajina, is one of the greatest heroes in Serbian history. Known for his brave defense of the Negotin region against the Ottomans, he is remembered for the words: “I give my head, but I will not give Krajina.” Serbian leader Karadjordje entrusted him with the defense of Negotin, where he ultimately lost his life defending the region.

The Hajduk Veljko Museum in Negotin preserves the memory of his life and heroism. It is housed in a residence built in the 1860s by Todorce, the district governor of Negotin.

The museum displays objects related to the life and legacy of Hajduk Veljko, including weapons from the First Serbian Uprising, household items from the 19th century, and works of art inspired by his character and deeds. Within the courtyard of the Holy Trinity Cathedral stands Hajduk Veljko’s gunpowder magazine, the only preserved part of the former “Baba Finka” fortification, which still bears witness to the turbulent history of this region
