Castra Martis, located in the centre of the present-day town of Kula, is one of the most significant Late Roman fortresses in northwestern Bulgaria. Built at the end of the 3rd century to protect an important Roman road, it served for centuries as a strategic stronghold of the Roman, Byzantine and Vidin Empires. Today, its preserved defensive walls and impressive tower, after which the town of Kula was named, stand as valuable witnesses to the turbulent history of this border region.
