Rakovitsa Monastery, founded between the 10th and 11th centuries, is one of the most important Orthodox spiritual sites in northwestern Bulgaria. Over the centuries, it was far more than a monastery – it served as a centre of education, spiritual life and the struggle for freedom, where the first secular school in the region was opened and important uprisings against Ottoman rule were planned. Today, the restored monastery complex preserves valuable frescoes, two churches and a rich history that bears witness to the perseverance of the local people.
